Sidi Kaouki, Essaouira, Morocco
Morocco holds a special place in my heart. A wondrous and delightfully magical place, my time within this country was far too short, however I still treasure the memories and friendships created. Being a photographer definitely has its perks, especially for this job. I was on the beach every day, watching the world's best windsurfers coach several weeks worth of paying customers and documenting their time through my lens. Sweet eh?
Sidi Kaouki Surf Station is just a short drive from Essaouira, a cultural and surfing hub on Africa's north-west coast. The station dominates a section of this rugged yet beautiful coastline and offers all types of surf based activities.
Having the slogan 'by surfers for surfers', the station was brought to life in 2005 by owner Felix, a native German who was blown away by the quality of the surf, the wind and the laidback lifestyle offered in Sidi Kaouki. Now, 10 years later, the Station hosts water enthusiasts from around the world, providing both first class lessons and a huge collection of rental gear.
Amongst the talent teaching during my stay was Florian Jung (ranked 17 in the world and individually pictured below). Seemingly effortlessly, he would smash through the swell and get impressive air regularly, despite the conditions being against the surfers. It was an absolute pleasure to work with these guys, and also pick-up numerous tips relating specifically to windsurfing and action photography in general.
Despite being primarily a surfing destination, Sidi Kaouki offers more than just wave-riding. You can supplement your holiday with a range of activities including camel or horse riding, a sight-seeing day in Essaouira and if you're lucky, sampling traditional Moroccan cuisine (Tajine) at a hosted Berber campfire!
So if you're planning on visiting Morocco and are a keen surfing enthusiast, definitely take the time to explore Sidi Kaouki!
